PAERE (/pear/) is a lab where we re-imagine and co-create how humankind experiences meaningful technological innovation. PAERE comes from the word pare which means to unlayer, cut away the outside of something. We aim reveal the artist inside of all us! As we develop websites, art installations, and interactive experiences, we strive to empower and push inspiring, authentic conversations in new, real directions beyond societal veneers which can separate us. As we pair--last pun of the day, we promise!--people and the planet with creative online experiences and products, we hope to enrich our future purposefully, inclusively and accessibly.
As we journey into our futures, the technologies that increasingly facilitate our lives pose many challenges and opportunities. PAERE believes in expanding the artistry and beauty of digital experiences into new, unexplored areas that support and integrate into the lives of all peoples inclusively and accessibly.
what do we do?
We create digital art installations, exhibitions and interactive experiences. Our work has been featured at the Mozilla Festival in the UK, Toronto Offsite Design Festival, Make Change Conference, Rites of Passage Conference, Black Speculative Arts Movement and others.
We develop and create digital products. We have developed websites for Yensomu Rites of Passage, Sawubona, African Canadian Heritage Association and others. We have also created a game, a Chrome extension, and are venturing into photogrammetry with our latest projects.
We facilitate community engagement with emerging technologies through workshops, exhibitions, talks and tours. We have worked with the Toronto Public Library, OCAD University, Ladies Learning Code, YWCA, Ryerson University, Mozilla, and others.
what do we mean by create inclusively?
We embrace creative collaborative solutions by marrying the goals of organizations and businesses with the humanity of their communities and clients. We believe in empowering people of all races, sexualities, spiritualities, ages, abilities, mental capacities, and genders through technology. From this insight, we innovate meaningfully and create social change. Our process is inspired by Google's Design Sprint and IDEO's human-centred approach.
what do we mean by exist accessibly?
For a space to be accessible, it requires that all means necessary are taken to create a space that accommodates the access needs of individuals in that space. This is different for everyone. We are guided by OCAD University's Inclusive Design model. We are focused on web accessibility, as outlined by the WCAG standards, while understanding that what is accessible to some, is not so to others and, due to this, the growth in this area is necessarily a learning process.
All venues are wheelchair accessible. We aim to have at least one event per project ASL interpreted by 2020.
culture eats strategy for lunch
Our core culture is marked by allowing everyone to find their voice, questioning assumptions and working collaboratively through our pursuit of innovation. Inspired by difference and driven by passion, we PAERE this empowerment with technology.
